North Beach Genealogical Departed Members

Our members come and go. Sometimes members move away and continue their interest in genealogy. Sadly, sometimes their days simply run out. This collects some of those departures. Mostly going from newer to older communications:

From a post on 21 March 2024: Michael Dindinger Family Travels

Michael & Carole Dindinger
Michael Dindinger has been a major inspiration to my genealogical efforts and helped our NBGS Society and this site immensely. Our society has had membership turn over so many didn't meet Michael at our meetings, but some older "inquiring minds want to know!"

I was somewhat at odds on how to describe the adventures of Michael Dindinger, his wife Carole and our past president Anna. Instead of trying to summarize it myself, it seemed better to simply include excerpts from  some emails. These follow below, including one from earlier this week.

Going from newest to oldest:

On 20 March 2024, Michael Dindinger wrote: "Sent from my iPhone    Will this pic work for you? ...  We are still unpacking but hope to soon be working family history."

On 28 February 2024, Michael Dindinger wrote: "We move tomorrow. Once settled I will share some material with you. Sent from my iPhone"

On 3 February 2024, Michael Dindinger wrote: "We will be moving as well at the end of February from Pennsylvania. ...we are going to move to Northern Florida. We have rented a place in a rural area close to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. We will have just under four acres and will have a garden, etc. Our future landlord is having fiber installed which will give us 1 gig of speed when we arrive." and in the same email: "Anna is heavily involved with fun canning. She has also been doing research on our family history but in a different approach to than I use which has given us a lot of information."

On 5 February 2022, Michael Dindinger wrote about several topics including: "originally we were coming to Pennsylvania for just one year of research. When it was determined that my prostate cancer had returned - plans changed." and also: "We lost our youngest daugher to liver failure earlier this year in Alaska. We were not able to go because of my intense radition treatment at the time. That was really hard emotionally. ...Anna drove 6700+ miles and got us to each of our other four children and we were able to see all but one of our grandchildren." and also: "I have talked with Forrest Adams...Thanks for info on Don Westfall - I had not heard about this." and finally: "On a positive note, we have accomplished more family history research than I could of hoped for..."

From NBGS Facebook Page on 1 March 2024:
Carrie Cartwright Bergquist with Elizabeth & Michael Turner

From our Facebook Page: At RootsTech.org. Michael Turner & Elizabeth Turner with Carrie Cartwright Bergquist. For newcomers to North Beach Genealogical, Michael & Elizabeth directed the Ocean Shores FamilySearch Center up until late February 2024 when Steve & Annette Johnson took up the directorship there. They will be much missed and we look forward to occasional reports from them in their new mission in Nauvoo, Illinois.

Update on 28 March
Turners in Nauvoo wearing period clothes
From a photo sent to Carrie Bergquist on 26 March from the Turners in Nauvoo: "Carrie           Here is a picture of us in our period clothes.  We're having lots of fun.        Mike"

Don Westfall passed on 30 September 2021

One of the stalwarts of NBGS, Don Westfall passed on 30 September
2021. The notice in the Aberdeen Daily World may be found here or at the top of this post. Sadly, the only photo I can put in this blog is a screen image of him conducting one of our Zoom meetings during the pandemic, but that image can be seen below.

Phil Lohrenz, past President of NBGS - October 2023

Phil was born in Tigard, Oregon in 1944, the third child of Jacob Peter and Marjorie Benson (Brown) Lohrenz. As a youth he was active in his local 4H club, and at Tigard High School he was the school photographer. He graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in Agriculture in 1971. He went on to work for various OSU departments, including Soils, Animal Science, and Agriculture.

In 1967 Phil married Linda Nelson. The couple lived in Corvallis, Oregon, and had one daughter. They divorced in 1976.
In 1977, Phil married Mary Jo Conibear. The couple relocated to Lincoln City, Oregon, where they opened a daycare. There, Phil was a man-of-all-work, constructing playground equipment, painting classrooms, repairing the roof, and teaching children how to tie their shoes by "chasing the rabbit around the tree." Eventually, Phil and Mary had two children of their own. Phil pursued many hobbies, among them tracing his family history, hunting and fishing, and breeding rabbits for show.

Mary Jo received a job offer in 1992, and the family moved to Herlong, California. Phil often described with fondness the international tour that followed, as Mary Jo's career with the US military took the Lohrenz family around the world. At each new location, Phil found work that suited his skills and interests-an English teacher, a veterinary technician, a home improvement consultant, a volunteer set builder for the local theater. He eased into retirement with the mastery of one who had puttered devotedly for his entire life. Phil loved to make things, filling his garage with Stuff That Might Be Useful Someday, and particularly enjoyed woodworking.

In 2016, Phil and Mary Jo moved to Ocean Shores, Washington, where Phil enjoyed fishing on Duck Lake. He was survived by his children, Kristin, Amelia, and Lucy, his wife, Mary Jo, and his sisters, Greta and Janet.
