Thanks to Carrie, we now have a "non-Zombie" Facebook page which may be found here.

I suggest visiting and following it, since I suspect Carrie will use it frequently.

Find it FAST in the US Census

If you need to look up something in the US Census. Pretty much all the big genealogy sites can help you. However, it takes time to put all the information in and then look through the images. It turns out there are simple and quick ways to look up something in the census.

Serendipity in Genealogy Research

One of those many "Family Tree" Books that my mother and father
filled out a little bit - this one turned out to have a surprise inside

Even in Genealogical research, serendipity occurs when we least expect it. In my case (Steve Averill), it led me to discover a fairly close relative I'd never even imagined. The discovery did not come after extensive research, but rather it simply fell upon my lap. The research that I did simply verified the relative was real and that her relationship was known and verifiable.

Zoom Presentation on 21 September - Pandemics and Genealogy

The great Spanish Flu epidemic killed millions of people around the world including over 600,000 deaths in the United States alone. There's a good chance there are Spanish Flu deaths in your family. The video embedded below shows some cases and goes on to explore how the Spanish Flu has many parallels with our Covid-19 pandemic. Schools were closed, masks required, and many sporting events were cancelled. One sporting event that was cancelled was especially near and dear to the hearts of us in the Pacific Northwest. The final game of the 1919 Stanley Cup was cancelled, and so the Seattle Metropolitans didn't have the chance to repeat their 1917 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.

Don Westfall Makes Family History with Online NBGS Meeting

On April 20, 2020, for the first time in history, our North Beach Genealogical Society held a full meeting online, using Zoom. You can read more about Zoom, here.

Zoom is a new experience for our Society, so everyone was undergoing a lot of learning during our "maiden voyage" online, leading up to Don Westfall presenting advice on writing family stories. Don's presentation charts are shown below. Click on any of them to bring up a full-size version.

Writing Your Family Story(ies)

Don Westfall made a presentation on Zoom at our April 20, 2020 meeting. He discussed writing family stories. To view the entire presentation, click here. You can also download the presentation to your own computer or tablet to view at your leisure.

Statistics - Such as they are

Someone asked at the last meeting if we knew what kind of viewership the NBGS Blog has. This post addresses that question; the light traffic we now have. We'll see how things change in the future.

First off, our site is not set up to tell specifically WHO may be visiting. If our traffic were heavier, we'd be able to tell what States and even some cities that were sending us visitors. We also get information on "referring" sites. There's no clear pattern on that at this point, but eventually, I'm guessing we will get a lot of referrals from Goggle and from some other genealogy sites, but who knows?

Emigration versus Immigration

by Michael W. Dindinger, via email on July 28, 2019
FAMILY HISTORY LEARNING MOMENT

Michael's main source for this post:

Riverton FamilySearch Library

Simply put, Emigration is when a person leaves a country.  Immigration is entering a country.  Many stories affecting our ancestors can be found, along with the reasons that influenced their decisions.  Get to know your ancestors better by turning your hearts to them, and you may discover their wonderful and faith promoting stories.
