Genealogy Cafe on July 17th

In what may become a quarterly series of events (depending on continued audience reception), NBGS is holding another Genealogy Cafe on Wednesday, July 17, from 11:30 until 3:30. Location is at the Ocean Shores Library.

I believe Carrie can certainly use more volunteers and it is more fun that way anyway. No special equipment needed.

In addition to the information on the flyer at left, Carrie notes that we have an added Cafe planned for Wednesday, October 16th 2024. Appointments are not being scheduled for October at this time, but keep that date on your calendar.

Departed Member Updates in March

Hi all,

Carrie Bergquist got an update from the Turners which has been added to the departed member as an update, along with the Dindinger update. Our departed member post is here.

North Beach Genealogical Departed Members

Our members come and go. Sometimes members move away and continue their interest in genealogy. Sadly, sometimes their days simply run out. This collects some of those departures. Mostly going from newer to older communications:

From a post on 21 March 2024: Michael Dindinger Family Travels

Michael & Carole Dindinger
Michael Dindinger has been a major inspiration to my genealogical efforts and helped our NBGS Society and this site immensely. Our society has had membership turn over so many didn't meet Michael at our meetings, but some older "inquiring minds want to know!"

I was somewhat at odds on how to describe the adventures of Michael Dindinger, his wife Carole and our past president Anna. Instead of trying to summarize it myself, it seemed better to simply include excerpts from  some emails. These follow below, including one from earlier this week.

Carrie, with a slightly Photoshopped sign

Thanks to Carrie, we now have a "non-Zombie" Facebook page which may be found here.

I suggest visiting and following it, since I suspect Carrie will use it frequently.

Ocean Shores FamilySearch Center has new directors

Steve & Anita at Center
News - Feb 2024 -  Steve & Anita Johnson have just been installed as new directors of its FamilySearch Center in Ocean Shores. Michael and Elizabeth Turner are departing for a mission in Nauvoo, Illinois. The FamilySearch Center remains in the church at 928 Albatross Street, Ocean Shores WA 98569. While a comprehensive comparison awaits, it looks like the FamilySearch Center has pretty much all the resources it had before the pandemic and some new ones as well. Our previous post, here, provided a descriptive list, here

Ocean Shores Genealogy News Scoop

Last Summer - Facility was for sale
Hello all,
New Owner

Remember - you saw it here first!

Not long ago, the Yoga Center at the intersection of Ocean Shores Boulevard and Minard Street was newly vacant and the building was for sale. However, as of yesterday, everything changed!

A new sign went up and it looks as if we will have one of the premier genealogical storage facilities on the west coast of Washington State.

Zoom Made Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy

Does Keitha Look Like a Seahawk Fan?

This post started out with all sorts of fancy stuff. However, our Ocean Shores Librarian, Keitha Owen, showed that simple can be best. In an email, she wrote:

Hi Steve

Have people that are interested in learning about Zoom call the library between 11 - 3 Tuesday - Saturday and make a Book a Techie appointment with Nick

Nearby Libraries

Nearby Libraries are those which are, at most, an express bus ride away. These ought to be the first ones someone doing genealogical research considers. Two of the three can be of significant help to the researcher. The first of these is the Ocean Shores Public Library, the second is the Timberland Regional Library System, with libraries in Aberdeen and Hoquiam, and the third, much less useful one is the Gray’s Harbor College Library in Aberdeen. The first two both offer Interlibrary Loan (ILL) connected with the Worldcat system, have good in-library Wi-Fi, and the Timberland System adds some genealogy-specific online resources. Both are free to residents and cards can be purchased by nonresidents for either short or longer terms. The GHC is less useful because it is oriented towards its student population who aren't generally interested in genealogy. It is included since it is nearby and people might wonder about its genealogy research facilities.

Grays Harbor Genealogical Society

Updated in May 2021

Diane Carter, of our society is a member of Gray's Harbor Genealogical Society. They meet in Hoquiam, and their collection was destroyed in a fire in 2018. Perhaps Diane will present a program on our neighboring society at some future time.
