FamilySearch LIBRARY Results for "Franklin County" Search |
Having a gauntlet thrown down, a member of our SOCIETY wondered what might be found about “Franklin County,” as in the Franklin County in Tennessee. Here’s what came up when using "Part 2 - Checking the Top Genealogy Library Catalogs"FamilySearch Library: The first decision after searching for Franklin County, was picking WHICH Franklin County. I picked “United States, Tennessee, Franklin” which yielded 63 results. A screenshot of the beginning of a long and mostly relevant list is at the top of this post. Allen County Public Library: It didn’t come up with much about the Tennessee Franklin County so I changed the search to Franklin County Tennessee. At that point, it came up with 32 items which were also mostly relevant. See a couple of top results below.

New York Public Library was almost, but not quite, a bust. It came up with thousands of irrelevant items. Changing “Franklin County” in Tennessee to a subject heading came up with more items, which were obtained by scrolling through a long list of subtopics. Examples of interesting sounding items there were “Inscriptions – Tennessee – Franklin County,” and “Marriage records – Tennessee – Franklin County.”
Library of Congress was a nervous endeavor from the start. As a result, the search was all items from “Franklin County Tennessee” right from the get go. Still, there were 662,406 items found, of which 643K were newspaper items. Just picking “books/printed material” gave interesting results, shown below. Clicking on any of these items leads to “LC Find It” which can lead to other interesting items. Mostly those were from a variety of Google searches.

Mid-Continent Library gave 1,556 catalog hits for “Franklin County,” so I searched for “Franklin County Tennessee” and that gave 52 Catalog results. Those are shown below. |

Dallas Public Library gave a bunch of results, mostly of Franklin County Texas. Changing the search to “Franklin County Tennessee” gave 48 results which looked interesting genealogically. A screenshot follows. |

Discretion being the better part of valor, the reader would be challenged to try the "Other 'Best Genealogy' Resources" for him/her self. As it turned out, our member, Forrest Adams noted he was particularly interested in the Garner Family of Franklin County. Soon, we'd located a couple of books that looked interesting. To make a long story short, Forrest located copies of the book various places (including my main home library of Grapevine, Texas), and was able to purchase a paper copy from the Franklin County Historical Society for a very reasonable cost of $30 plus shipping. Shipping isn't cheap nowadays, but didn't put the book in the "too expensive" category. Now he just needs to go THROUGH the book and check out its many references.
